MILWAUKEE (WISN) – Seven children are safe after bullets ripped through a Milwaukee home daycare. The daycare owner blames a neighbor angry at parking issues for the shootings.
Bullet holes are still visible inside and outside the Little Warriors daycare center in Milwaukee after shots were fired April 12 at the building. Daycare owner Andjeia Harris put the children in a bathtub to protect them until police arrived.
“The daycare was shot down multiple times, and all I could do was round up all my kids, bring them down, and protect them with, you know, trying to use my parenting skills,” Harris said. .
She is currently operating from a temporary location.
Harris blames the shooting on a neighbor, angry at what they saw as parking problems caused by his new business.
“The bullets went right over my head. I felt the glass shatter on my back. It was like melting glass. It felt like it was melting into my back, as I shielded myself, trying to shield. I had a 1 year old in a high chair. I had a 4 month old baby still in his carrier seat,” she said.
This baby’s father, James Cooper, barely understands the bullets whizzing by in daycare.
“I don’t know why people are like that. It’s just the way people are,” he said. “Honestly, it hurt my heart because I could have lost my little girl, and she’s like everything to me.”
Harris says she had just started her fledgling business there. Now she won’t come back, if she reopens at all.
“I could have lost my life. Any of my children could have lost their life. Fleas have no name. Those bullets could have easily gone through the wall and hit any of my children,” she said.
Police have arrested four men in connection with the incident, but so far no charges have been filed.
