Dane Co. YMCA cuts some after-school child care programs due to staffing shortages

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Dane County YMCA cut some of its after-school child care programs before the start of the school year due to a staff shortage, a doorman confirmed. word.

YMCA representative Scott Shoemaker said after extensive recruiting efforts, the organization had no candidates for childcare.

Affected families should have received an email from YMCA West’s CEO on Tuesday, which described the issue as part of a ‘very real staffing crisis affecting schools and child care providers in our region and across the country. “. The email also detailed the organization’s efforts to try to hire more staff, including reaching out to other child care providers to consider sharing staff.

Not all sites are affected by the issue, but the rep said those affected are in Middleton.

The agency said it hopes to get programs back up and running, but will need people to apply for positions.

Dear Families,

I have important and disappointing news to share. Due to a very real staffing crisis affecting schools and child care providers in our region and across the country, I am extremely sorry to inform you that the YMCA is unable to operate the program your child’s after-school care at this time. We are placing your child on a waiting list, and if we are able to hire teachers and reopen your child’s site, I will contact you immediately.

As a parent of two school-aged children, I know this development can cause you difficulties. Unfortunately, we simply don’t have the staff to run the program and have exhausted all research options. Our human resources team used all available methods to recruit and hire new teachers. I have personally worked with principals and administrators in your school district to enlist the help of teachers in the district, as we have done in the past, but they are also understaffed. We’ve even reached out to other child care providers to discuss a staff sharing deal, but they’re going through the same crisis. All of our efforts have been unsuccessful and we currently have no applicants for open childcare positions. Our teacher shortage extends to all sites, so it is not possible to move your child to another site after school.

This decision was not taken lightly, but it is literally our only choice. Again, I can’t tell you how sorry I am. We will refund your registration and the September fees already collected. Plus, if your family doesn’t have a Y subscription, we’ll give you a free subscription for the rest of 2022; if you are already a member, we will cover your membership fees for the rest of the year. Do not hesitate to answer me directly for any questions.
