The Augusta Area School District was recently surprised with a very generous donation. As of fall 2021, the Augusta Area School District has been exploring ways to help address the significant child care shortage in the Augusta community.

As in many rural areas, the demand for childcare exceeds the available capacity of providers in the area. As a community partner, the school district wanted to help find solutions to this problem. During a conversation with local resident and Augusta elder Jennifer Bethke, concerns about child care shortages surfaced. A passion to positively impact the lives of young children in the community inspired Jennifer to get involved.

She met with Augusta Area School District Administrator Ryan Nelson and informed him that she would like to realize the vision of an early learning center and after-school kids’ club. for the community of Augusta by donating funds to the district to build a facility that can accommodate children for both regular child care and before and after school care.

“The continued support Jennifer has shown to the school district and the community of Augusta is truly remarkable. Her continued passion for positively impacting the lives of children in our community through a partnership with the school will last for decades. generations,” said Ryan Nelson, Augusta Area School District Administrator. “We are extremely grateful for this generous donation.” The district plans to continue the development phase of the project with the goal of opening the center for early learning and after school kids club by early 2024.

The center will operate under the auspices of the Augusta Area School District, but will be organized similarly to a private facility.
