WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – When school is closed for the summer, many students and families lose access to an important food source. For some children, school meals represent up to half of their daily calories.
“For kids facing hunger, summer vacation can be anything but a break,” said LeRonica Roberts, Food Gatherers Community Food Programs Coordinator. “When school is closed for the summer, millions of children who rely on school breakfast and lunch programs lose access to reliable, nutritious food.”
To support children during the summer months, Food Gatherers will maintain 23 free lunch sites in Washtenaw County from June 20 through August 19.
All children under the age of 18 are welcome, as well as people up to the age of 26 currently enrolled in a state-recognized educational program. Meals will be provided regardless of race, color, national origin, gender or disability.
“The summer dining program makes it easy for families to access meals and not worry about where their kids’ next meal is coming from,” Roberts said.
Each child present will receive a free meal, which must be consumed on site. Sites can be open or closed depending on the day, with some closed sites having restrictions.
Hunger has a detrimental impact on children growing and developing. Students who are not adequately nourished during the summer may fall behind in school or suffer long-term health consequences.
To combat this, Food Gatherers distributed 7.5 million meals last year to families in Washtenaw County, hoping to promote healthy eating throughout life. This year, they’re partnering with the Michigan Department of Education, Toyota Research and Development, the Lake Trust Foundation and the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor to make it happen.
