Regional child care job fair aims to hire hundreds of workers – Press and guide


A critical shortage of child care workers in Southeast Michigan has created a need to actively recruit employees.

Recognizing this need, Five Michigan Works! Agencies across the region are teaming up to host the region’s largest virtual child care job fair from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on February 15.

Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation, Oakland County Michigan Works!, Michigan Works! Macomb/St. Clear, Michigan works! Southeast and SEMCA Michigan Works! are coordinating the virtual event with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity and Great Start to Quality.

These events are hosted on the Brazen platform, provided by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.

“A strong child care industry is crucial to Southeast Michigan’s economy,” said Shamar Herron, executive director of Michigan Works! South East. “Not only do child care programs provide rewarding jobs, but as we emerge from the pandemic, they get working parents back into the workforce and need to be properly staffed.”

Jennifer Llewellyn, director of Oakland County Michigan Works!, said this virtual job fair will connect those interested in child care and parenting with a number of child care providers. , including private employers and school districts offering early childhood programs.

“Area daycares are struggling to find talent,” Llewellyn said. “At the same time, we know there are high school students, college students and adults looking for fulfilling and meaningful career opportunities in their communities. This can be a first step in achieving this goal.

Nearly 100 licensed child care providers with immediate openings from Branch, Hillsdale, Jackson, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties are expected to participate. Many of them have received Childcare Stabilization Grant funds through the US bailout to hire, train and retain staff.

According to the Michigan Department of Education, as of last September there were more than 4,700 openings for full-time child care staff in Michigan, along with a similar number of part-time openings.
